“My life is changing. In high school the real world is suddenly all too real.”
“Preparation for college has begun. Grades matter. Tests are harder. Teachers are more demanding. Consequences are larger. My fun hobbies, interests, volunteering, and just doing cool things are now community service and extra-curricular activities to feed my college application. Everything counts and is seemingly qualifying me (or disqualifying me) for certain colleges and universities.”
“The pressure is on. I’m stressed and being driven by my parents, teachers, and counselors to round out my college preparation. I feel so manipulated to conform to standards set by hordes of faceless college admissions committees.”
“On one hand, I can’t wait to get on with my life and get out on my own. On the other hand, I haven’t got a clue what I should do with my life.”
“I admit it. Lurking in the swirl of my homework, after school activities, sports, music, movies, texting, and hanging out with my friends lives this monster of a question: ‘Where will I go to college?’”
“Choosing the right college seems like it’s a long way away. Yet, that decision is coming soon. I see it with the upperclassmen. Anyway, how am I supposed to know what kind of work I want to do when I’m just a teen in high school?”
“It’s real. I get it but I wish I wasn’t lost in the process.”
Stop Preparing For College: Start Preparing For Life
There is a better way. It begins by better knowing who you are. Do you have a clear picture of your emerging strengths, talents, aptitudes, and giftedness?
Schoolwork is important. Homework matters. But, your lifework is the base of it all. You’re never too young (or too old) to explore the depths and heights of who you are and who you are becoming as you look to scale the mountains of your life.
Your high school years are more than simply rounding out college applications. This is a time of developing personally, taking charge of your life, and considering broad options based on your interests and aptitudes. The better you know yourself, the more your best opportunities and options will emerge.
You benefit from knowing yourself better by:
- Creating situations where you can best study and learn.
- Directing your course selections with a plan in mind.
- Guiding yourself toward an Honors or AP class for your reasons.
- Generating ideas about career possibilities
- Releasing all the unnecessary pressures from being unfocused.
The foundation you create today will inform and help you form the rest of your life.
